As part of Linz 2009 – European Capital of Culture, Schaurausch transformed the city centre into an exhibition space, bringing works by fifty artists into shop windows and public spaces. Hilde Kentane’s contribution combined sculptural works made from discarded plastic packaging with interventions in commercial environments.
Using the visual language and materials of consumer culture, the works bring together advertising, desire and waste. Familiar packaging is cut apart and reconstructed into strange figures and objects, shifting the material from something disposable into something unsettling and absurd.
An image of Kentane’s work was used for the exhibition catalogue cover, as well as for posters and large-scale banners displayed throughout the city.
