SYNTHETIC IVORY | 2006
Plastic shopping bags, plastic trash bags, plastic food bags, plastic packaging — a disposable jungle of commercial messages, symbols and icons.
I was intrigued by these synthetic artefacts of everyday life, accumulated over the years and carrying traces of what we buy, eat, desire and discard. Cheap and seemingly insignificant, they reflect the excesses of a consumer society and the systems we inhabit.
By cutting up and reassembling discarded plastic shopping bags, I transformed their colourful prints, logos and commercial messages into another reality.
The works took the form of sculptures, installations, collages and drawings.
